Abstract:
Badis badis is widely distributed in the lowlands of the Ganga, Brahmaputra
and Mahanadi basins, in Nepal, India and Bangladesh. A neotype is selected
for B. badis, which is also the lectotype of B. buchanani. Badis
chittagongis, new species, is described from hillstreams in Bangladesh.
Badis kanabos, new species, is described from the Brahmaputra drainage in
western Assam. Badis ruber is shown to be a senior synonym of B.
burmanicus, and a common neotype is selected for this species which occurs
in southern Myanmar and locally in the middle Mekong drainage in Thailand.
Badis siamensis is a valid species restricted to southern peninsular
Thailand. A similar species, B. khwae, new species, is described from the
Mae Nam Khwae Noi drainage in Thailand. Badis assamensis was possibly
described without specimens, at least no type specimens can be located; a
neotype is selected from a species occurring in the Brahmaputra drainage in
Assam, India. It is the largest species in the genus, reaching 68 mm SL.
Badis blosyrus, new species, also from the Brahmaputra drainage in Assam,
is similar to B. assamensis, but has a much larger gape. Badis corycaeus,
B. pyema and B. kyar are new species described from the Ayeyarwady drainage
in northern Myanmar. Badis ferrarisi, new species, is described from the
Chindwin drainage in Myanmar.
A new genus, Dario, with Labrus dario Hamilton as type species, is proposed
for three small badid species. Dario dario is the smallest percoid fish
known so far, females reproductively mature at about 10 mm SL, males not
attaining 20 mm SL. A neotype is selected for D. dario, restricting the
name to a small species occurring in the Brahmaputra drainage in Assam and
northern West Bengal, India. Badis badis bengalensis is a synonym of D.
dario. Dario hysginon, new species, is the second smallest species in the
genus, only reaching ca 20 mm SL, and is described from the Ayeyarwady
drainage in northern Myanmar. A similar small species is D. dayingensis, new
species, from the Irrawaddy drainage in southern Yunnan, China. The Badidae
share uniquely with the Nandidae (restricted to the genus Nandus) a
distally bifurcate hemal spine on the second preural centrum.
